This week has been a good
week, especially considering it is still early September. The Salmon River
watershed received approximately 2 inches of rain this past week. As a result water flows were increased to 500
CFS Plus significant run off. At this point water flows from rain runoff has
receded, I also expect the release to be throttled back to the fall minimum
flow of 350 CFS soon. We also have been having some cooler weather than normal,
water temperatures have been excellent ranging from the high 50° to 60° mark.
Salmon are continuing to come into the river, some days are better than others.
But overall the fishing has been consistently good. When you take into
consideration the time of the year. The fishing his been excellent. Early
September Chinook and Coho salmon can be a serious handful once hooked up and
this week has been no exception. Along
with the Chinook salmon, we are presently hooking up with decent numbers of
Coho Salmon. The word from the lake is that there is a lot of Coho salmon yet
to come in to the river. At the piece the salmon are coming into the river
system. It will not take long before entire river will have good numbers of
fish from one end to the other. Production flies; it is still early and I have
yet to see a pattern when it comes to flies. However the old stand buys such as
Willie burgers in black and olive, sizes 4 and 6 are doing very well. I have
also had a few occasions where the add stuff performs very well. So for flies
we are still in that try it and see what happens stage.
Note:
I still have prime days
available for mid to late September. This is salmon fishing at it’s best.
They’re still way off from spawning and when hooked up they are very angry,
lots of fun. Also still have days
available for October. These dates are for mid to late October steelhead
fishing.
