What can I say; Finely water flows have come down to a normal fishing level. It has been incredibly wet spring so far. Starting with the trout streams, Oatka creek is at, an ideal fishing level. Upper Genesee River is also at a good fishing flow right now. Time to get our trout streams. For the most part Hendrickson Hatch is over with the exception of evening spare falls. However from late morning to midafternoon there is still, a sporadic Blue Wang olive hatch. These are some of largest olives of the year; they are an honest size 16. We will be seeing the some light caddis soon. This first early caddis will be a size 14, We should see these bugs from midafternoon through evening time. Bug season on our trust streams is well underway. Fortunately for us we now have good water flows and hopefully the cool air temperatures will continue.
At this Point we would be packing up the big rods and shutting down the tributary program till this coming fall. However if you have been following what’s been going with the Salmon River this spring, you would be aware that we are actually having a small run of Atlantic Salmon. Looks like this program might be showing some real progress. As of this point the salmon river water flows now down to summer base levels 185 CFS. For us this is an ideal water flows for Atlantic salmon, the last few years I have put a lot of effort into figuring out this new fisheries. As of now I would rate Atlantic salmon fishing as having about a 50% chance of an encounter with an Atlantic salmon.  With odds like this we are approaching the quality of some of the best Atlantic salmon rivers in North America. Keep in mind we need to Fish through a lot of water and you need to fish a lot differently than I do for steelhead. I suspect this fishing should hold up until mid to late June, all depends on water temperature. Along with Atlantic Salmon we are catching a handful of small mouth bass, Nice buy catch when fishing for salmon. Some of these bass have been over the 5 pound mark. A real tough customer even with a 13 foot two hand rod.

Looks like we are gutting all the rain that we did not get last season, we’re getting it now. We have and are receiving consistently moderate to heavy rainfall. Right now this is very frustrating, we all want to get on our favorite trout stream and fish the Hendrickson Hatch instead of sitting at home tying more flies. Also with all the high water, it’s looking like the end of our steelheads season, Swing season is going to be a big washout. The Salmon River spent two days falling over 3000 CFS, now it is flowing at 1800 CFS Plus runoff. However not all is lost. Trout season last several months.
Despite all of our frustrations right now, this cold weather, rain and high water is going to help extend the bug hatches and give us some quality fishing through late May and June. All of this high water is good for the trout. Especially when you consider the fact that most of our trout streams is at lest in some way supplemented with stocked trout. The high water gives both covered and time for these trout to disburse and learn how to be basically a trout and eat bugs. Also water conditions will also stay in ideal conditions for the trout later in to this summer. Keep in mind the drought last summer and low water flows. We should not have much concern going into this summers trout fishing season with low water. There should be plenty of groundwater keeping all the springs flowing this summer. Looking forward, the end of this coming week. The weather looks to be improving considerably. Hopefully we can be on our favorite trust streams by then. Also as much as it has been raining hopefully we will not find ourselves in another summer dropped. We do need the rain to continue, Maybe not as intense.

Looks like we are having an honest relatively speaking run of Atlantic salmon. This is where we will have to wait for the water flows to come down so we can get back in river and see what’s going on with the Atlantic salmon. Over the last few years we have been experiencing a steady increase in the numbers of Atlantic. Hopefully this is an extension of that trend that we’ve been experiencing. I am hopeful, Due to the fact that present condition of the lakes forage base is beneficial to Atlantic salmon. The could be witnessing the return Atlantic Salmon to Lake Ontario and its tributaries. As for all the high water flows, this will definitely spread the salmon throughout the river very quickly. Even if the numbers are way higher and more fish than we’ve ever experienced, fishing for these fish is still going to be a coverage game.  The numbers the Fish are still going to be very low.  We will still need to cover water fast to find a fish that wants to play.

Looks like Spring has finally arriving, starting with western New York, Not much has changed. Water flows are still high in all of our trout streams. Despite the high water the Hendrickson Hatch is coming off but that’s normal predictable schedule. The bugs are going to hatch regardless of water flows. Hopefully this coming week we will be able to get on our trout streams and enjoy this hatch. Until then continue to monitor water flows.  Keep in mind the Weather forecasts continues to show periodic rain.
What is going on right now with the fishing? The Salmon River continues to fish at a decent rate. Water flows and water temperatures have moderated considerably. For the last few days, water flows are at 500 CFS; water temperatures are now in the mid 50-degree range. The steelhead spawning activity is winding down. There is still some spawning activity in the upper river. With the warmer water temperatures, the steelheads are now going to be chasing flies. At this point we are fishing for mostly Drop back steelhead. This can be some of the most exciting steelhead fishing of the entire steelhead run. This is what we call, swing season. It is now time for the spey rod to have its day.  Fishing Drop back steelhead require us to cover a lot of water. Using sink tips and two-handed rods make this process far more easily and efficient.
Other news, over last week there has been a few adult Atlantic salmon being caught in the Douglaston salmon run. Hopefully this is a positive prelude to what is to come. Only time will tell, if this will be anything significant. However I will be doing my normal late May early June Atlantic Salmon routine. If interested please let me know.

Note;

We still have prime fishing dates are available, for the Salmon River.  This will be some of the best steelhead fishing with the spey rods of the year. We still have prime May date available. If you’re interested please feel free to call and we can discuss your options cell 585-233-0436
