Looks like we are completely
iced out in all of our rivers and creeks. Starting with western New York; as of
now all of our rivers and creeks are flowing very high and off color. We also
have a fair amount of snow yet to melt off, so snowmelt conditions are
definitely going to continue for at least another week. This is nothing unusual
for this time of the year. Looks like we
are going to have a normal time schedule for this springs steelhead run. We
should see water temperatures and water flows improved by the end of this
coming week, weather depending
Salmon
river; so far the fishing remains very consistent. Water flows are still at
350CFS, how long will the flows remain constant is the question. Sooner or
later spring run off is going to hit the Salmon River. Until then there is a
slow trickle of fish working their way up river. Over the past week the lower
and mid River sections of the Salmon River are now starting to get a few fresh
fish holding in the more productive pools. As of now there is no real
concentration of fish in any one particular spot from Lower River to mid
Rivers. Best strategy for fishing these sections of the river is to swing flies;
we need to cover a lot of water fast to find a cooperative fish. Keep in mind
water temperatures are very cold it is still fishing in winter conditions. Fish
a very slow swing and keep your fly as deep as possible. Ideal fly patterns for
swing are bunny leech and small intruders, keep the fly length somewhere
between 2 to 3 inches long. Up river stay with stone fly nymphs in size 8
to12.
