Starting with the Salmon
River. We did receive some rain this week, however the rainfall did not amount
too much more than maintenance. As a result water flows remained constant at
350 CFS. The weather forecast for this
week is predicting some more rain. Hopefully we will receive enough to create
some run off and possibly an increase in waterfalls.
The salmon fishing continues
to be spotty. One day we will have a strong trickle of fish flowing all day,
the next day no salmon movement at all. At best the salmon fishing has been and
still is spotty. However when the salmon fishing is on we have been enjoying
good salmon fishing. This is not to say that there is a full out run and you
can catch salmon anywhere in the river with anything you want. When these
strong trickles of salmon are happening, you still need to be in productive
water and fishing it correctly. The salmon run is still running way behind
schedule. This also goes for the spawning activities; we are still only seeing
limited spawning mostly in the upper river. At this Point I am focusing most of
my activities in the lower portions of the river. We have been finding our best
salmon activity to be around first light to late morning that is if there is
not much salmon movement. After that our fishing efforts turn to steelhead.
The steelhead fishing is a
different story. I would say that the steelhead fishing is definitely running
about a month ahead of schedule. Steelhead fishing has gotten consistent enough
that the salmon or not actively running we are focusing on fishing for
steelhead. This is nothing new, and I said in previous update we are
experiencing good Steelhead fishing. However over the past week the steelhead
fishing has improved sharply. The past week more new fish are coming in to the
river. We are starting to have consistent fishing in both ends of the river. As
of now I have not received any reliable reports of the quality of the steelhead
fishing from the middle river.
Productive flies, for this
week has been Black stoneflies, orange, pink egg flies, and of course the
standard Willy buggers in black and silver, brown and copper, olive. This week
we did our best in lowlight fishing conditions with pink estaz woolly buggers.
The best size this week for willy bugger fishing is a size 6.
