Spring is slowly cropping it way in. The steelhead fishing in Western NY is finally starting to tack off. The water temperatures has wormed up to the 40 degrees mark. Because the water has been slowly warming, the spring steelhead run has been more of a trickle than a run. This is not all that bad of a thing. A slow run will last longer, even though the fishing is not as fast pace as some would like. The fishing is consistently decent. Allowing everyone a chance to get some good fishing in. My biggest concern is water flow. We have not had any significant precipitation in over two weeks. As for now, so far so good, water flows are low but fishing. We do need some rain.  We are funding fish on the gravel and in the pools. For flies, we are having our best results with black woolly buggers when we are fishing on the gravel. When fishing in the pools we are having our best success with egg patterns.

The Salmon River;  With the recent cold snap, spring runoff has been slowed. As of now the water flow is at 500 CFS plus run off. There is a snow base of over 6 feet in the Salmon River watershed. Once runoff starts, I suspect water flows are going to increase significant. We will need to keep a watch on water conditions. For now there is a significant amount of fish in the upper River. There has been some limited spawning activity, however once snowmelt starts, water temperatures will drop significantly, putting a stop to spawning activity. The runoff water from the melting snow will be cold enough to make the fishing difficult. Most of the time, this will last for a week or two, then water temperatures improve and the fishing will turn back on. For now stonefly nymphs are the most productive fly patter. Stay with size12 to 8 in black.

Not; I still have openings for April 9,10,11, May 9,10,11,12,13,14,15. The May fishing will be swing flies for drop back steelhead and by mid-May there will be the first of the Atlantic Salmon.  All this with a bit of trout fishing mixed in.
