It is definitely that time of the year once again, especially in western NY. The recent warm weather has milted off what sown we had. Water temps have started to rise in the river and stream. I am finding fresh runs of steelhead in the rivers and feeding lake run brown trout. For the western NY the spring steelhead run appears on, if with good conditions we can have 4 week of good steelhead fishing ahead of us. With the sown run off over we will now need regular rain events to maintain good water flows. As of now water flows on all the river and steam, are on the high side and is a bit off color, however quite fishable. The water temps are in the upper 30 degree range, keep in mind that water temps will be fluctuating considerably over the next few weeks. As always keep in mind conditions can and do change quickly. For flies, not much has changed yet go with egg flies in your favorite colors in size 10 to 8, black stone nymphs in 10 and 8, white wooly buggers and zonkers, in size 8 to 6. The Salmon River is steelhead fishing is running behind, the western NY rivers. This is normal. The water flows in the salmon has been stable at 900 CFS. We will need to keep a close watch on the water flows, spring run-off will be coming soon and the water flow will be going up. There has been a steady trickle of fresh fish coming in. The whole river has been fishing, obviously the upper river has the most fish. Of course this is where the most fishing pressure is located. For now there is a lot of stone fly activity going on. These are what I refer to as a winter stone. There are a few different stone flies hatching at the same time. The size range is from a 16 to a 8. I like to use a size 8 black stone fly nymphs. Not : I still have opening March 25,26,28,29,30. April 2,3,4,5,6,7,9,10,11, . This fishing the Western NY tributaries, centered around the Oak Orchard river. I also have days in May swing flies for steelhead on the Salmon River. If you have any questions please feel free the call my cell is 585-233-0436
